Since its beginning, Magnuson Children’s Garden has been fortunate to have the support of many local individuals, businesses, and organizations:

 

Each step of the Children’s Garden design, creation, and stewardship has had the participation of trained Master Gardener volunteers.  When the original Children’s Garden Committee was formed in 2001, it was chaired by MG Cindy Hazard for almost 10 years, then by MG Emily Bishton.  Currently, approx. half of its members are MGs who have committee leadership roles.   The Master Gardener Foundation of King County also provides an annual budget to the Children’s Garden Committee to purchase supplies for free education classes and special events, as well as plants and other materials needed to maintain the garden for the benefit of all visitors throughout the year.  This official sponsorship means that any MG in King County can fulfill their required annual volunteer hours at Magnuson Children’s Garden events and special projects.  This means that at all our events, you can also get free answers to your own home garden questions from trained Master Gardeners!

 

Magnuson Community Garden is the non-profit “umbrella” organization whose board of directors manages the entire 4-acre site behind the Brig building, which includes the Children’s Garden, P-Patch, Native Plant Border, Demonstration Orchard, Tranquil Garden, and Native Plant Nursery.  Their partnership with the Seattle Dept. of Parks & Recreation is how and why the whole community garden was built, and their partnership with Children’s Hospital got all the earth-moving done to create the garden’s central mound and Lookout, hillside garden beds and spiral paths, the Rolling Lawn, and other topography! The Magnuson Community Garden board also applies for grants and receives donations, and manages them in a way that benefits each area within the community garden.

 

The Children’s Garden has been designed and planted with the participation of local families, scout troops, campfire and 4-H groups, landscape professionals, community organizations, and others.  Volunteer power from these individuals and groups has also been the driving force in regular maintenance that keeps it growing healthy and beautiful every year!   One special partner that has been an essential part of the sustainability of the Children’s Garden every year since the beginning is a fabulous local non-profit called Seattle Works.  Their staff has organized dozens of Seattle Works Days, Hot Project Days, and Teamworks events over the past 15+ years, that have been attended by many hundreds of wonderful stewardship volunteers.

 

Though the Children’s Garden is maintained by volunteers, Seattle Parks grounds crew staff keep us well-supplied with wood chip mulch, mow the Rolling Lawn, and have provided log and stone benches for several of our gathering areas.

 

The Seattle Parks Foundation is a relatively new partner that has made a huge impact on the Children’s Garden!  As its fiscal sponsor, they manage any grant funding received from the City of Seattle, as well as monetary donations received through the annual GiveBig Seattle Day each May, and the nationwide GivingTuesday event each November.  This partnership has enabled the Children’s Garden Committee to raise funds for new special projects that are now in the works, such as the Sea Turtle puddling pond sculpture and an addition to the garden shed to provide cover for rainy day events!

 

How Can You Help?

The Magnuson Children’s Garden Committee extends a warm welcome to all individuals, groups, and businesses that want to help us sustain the garden! There are multiple ways you can contribute, and each is a vital ingredient in our success:

1) Donate to the garden:

 

  • In-kind donations are also welcome! If you have extra garden tools, gloves, plants, art supplies, or other items that you think would benefit the Children’s Garden, please contact us at magnusonchildrensgarden@gmail.com with a description of your donation, and include a photo if possible.  Please do not drop anything off at the Childen’s Garden without contacting us.  We’ll reply right away to let you know if we can accept it, and if so, arrange a time to pick it up or to meet you at the garden for delivery.  Thanks so much!

 

2) Participate in one of our Stewardship Events:

  • Typical stewardship tasks include simple garden maintenance such as weeding and mulching beds and paths, planting and fertilizing. We provide gloves, tools, and refreshments for stewardship volunteers at all of our events too!

 

  • King Co. Master Gardeners or other experienced gardeners are always on hand at each event to guide stewardship volunteers, answer your home gardening questions, and make all our events fun for novice gardeners as well as experienced ones!
